Trade talks between Hurricanes and Stars for Mikko Rantanen are intensifying ahead of NHL deadline on friday.
Trade discussions surrounding Mikko Rantanen are gaining momentum, with the Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars reportedly engaged in negotiations ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, both teams are exploring a deal for the high-scoring winger, though it remains unclear whether Dallas would secure a long-term extension if the trade materialises.
Rantanen, 28, was acquired by Carolina from the Colorado Avalanche in January in a three-team trade that saw Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and multiple draft picks head the other way.
However, the Hurricanes have been unable to agree on an extension with the pending free agent, making him a prime trade candidate.
Since joining Carolina, Rantanen’s production has dipped, with two goals and six points in 13 games. On the season, he has 27 goals and 70 points in 61 games. He played 20:47 minutes in the Hurricanes’ 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday but did not register a point.
The Stars, currently second in the Central Division, are looking to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run. Earlier in the day, the Avalanche acquired Brock Nelson, highlighting the competitive push among Western Conference contenders as the trade deadline approaches.
