The Red One release date has finally been set for 2024 during the holiday season. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans in lead roles, Red One has been billed as a globe-trotting, action-adventure Christmas movie, though its actual plot is unknown. The star-studded Red One cast also includes Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, J.K. Simmons, Nick Kroll, and Kristofer Hivju. While Red One was filming from October 2022 to February 2023, multiple set photos surfaced online teasing J.K. Simmons’ bulked-up Santa Claus and the inclusion of Krampus.

Now, Johnson and Evans’ anticipated holiday movie has finally received a release date. According to Deadline, the Red One release date has been set for November 15, 2024. The movie will be released exclusively in theaters before ultimately streaming on Prime Video at a later date.

Red One Continues Amazon MGM’s Release Strategy

Red One, which is being distributed by Amazon MGM, will continue the studio’s recent release strategy. Amazon acquired MGM in 2021, but as of late, the studio has been releasing movies in theaters first before streaming on Prime Video at a later date. Ben Affleck’s Air and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, the latter of which releases December 22 on Prime Video, are two titles that have had success with this strategy. Now, Red One will continue the studio’s plan of releasing movies in theaters first before streaming on Prime Video.

By releasing in theaters on November 15, the Christmas-themed Red One is aiming to capitalize on the historically profitable pre-Thanksgiving period of the holiday season. However, Red One will face some significant competition during this time of the year from another holiday movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and Robert De Niro’s mob movie, Alto Knights, both releasing on November 15. Red One has hopes of launching a franchise reimagining holiday mythology, though that will depend on how it performs in theaters and on Prime Video during the 2024 holiday season.
