Branded as ‘dangerous’ by Kieran Trippier after the game, the 23-year-old’s was a class act in midfield, as he toyed around with Eddie Howe’s side from minute one.

Somehow ghosting in free pockets, Foden was a nuisance on the half-turn, creating chances out of thin air, beating defenders, showcasing his wondrous technical ability and assisting Alvarez’s winner.

“Phil can play all the positions in the forward areas. He has incredible ability between the lines, the way he turns and attacks the last line.”

Pep Guardiola continued to praise him after Manchester City got the all-important three points against Newcastle, saying, “It’s one of the best I have ever seen. Every control, he knows exactly how to attack the goal. He doesn’t need two or three touches to be in the right position to attack the goal.”

“Phil, I know how good he can play in that position, as a striker, right-winger, left-winger. I am happy because I have the feeling he is coming back.”

It was not to be surprised by Foden’s performance, as he finally shown why there has been such a push to use him in midfield, where he is most comfortable.

Manchester City’s young star appeared to be the obvious choice to succeed Kevin De Bruyne whenever he retires after filling the hefty shoes left behind by the Belgian.
