Almost four decades after Tom Cruise first hit the screen as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun, he reprised his role in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick.

The fresh cast for Top Gun: Maverick includes Miles TellerJennifer ConnellyGlen Powell and Jon Hamm, plus Cruise and Val Kilmer, who both reprised their roles from the original movie. Teller later told The Wrap that he learned a lot from Cruise throughout the project.

I got a masterclass in how to make a movie, and Tom is always thinking of the audience,”he said. “To work with someone who is so meticulous on every aspect … literally every detail that guy is dialed in on … There’s been nothing on this film that didn’t take a lot of training to accomplish.”

Since its premiere, the sequel has become the second highest-grossing film of 2022 after Avatar: The Way of Water and one of the most successful films of all time.

So, if you’re ready to go down memory lane with the original 1986 Top Gun and its follow-up, Top Gun: Maverick, here’s where to watch the movies.

Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) Lieutenant Junior Grade Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) are sent to attend Top Gun, a Naval training program.

Before their first day, Mav meets a woman in a bar but discovers the next day she is Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), an astrophysicist and civilian instructor who becomes interested in Mav after hearing about his maneuvers.

He is reprimanded by Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf (Tom Skerritt) and butts heads with Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Kilmer) over his reckless behavior, and begins a relationship with Charlie. After abandoning his wingman Rick “Hollywood” Neven (Whip Hubley) during a training drill to chase Viper, he is defeated in an attempt to teach him a lesson about teamwork.

During a dogfight with Iceman, he suffers a flameout of his engines and goes into an unrecoverable flat spin, leading Maverick and Goose to both eject. Unfortunately, Goose slams into the aircraft canopy and is killed. Guilt-ridden Mav is cleared of wrongdoing, and goes to Viper for guidance.

He graduates and congratulates Iceman, who won the Top Gun trophy. Maverick, Iceman and Hollywood all receive deployment orders to the USS Enterprise to provide air support for the rescue of a disabled communication ship in hostile waters.

Hollywood is shot down and Maverick struggles due to a catapult failure, but is able to shoot down three MiGs with Iceman destroying a fourth, forcing the other two to flee. They return victorious to Enterprise, with Maverick and Iceman finally putting their differences aside.

The original Top Gun is available to stream on Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and is also available to rent via Amazon or Apple TV.

After graduating more than 30 years earlier from Top Gun, Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is still pushing the limits of flight and working as a test pilot.

Admiral Chester “Hammer” Cain (Ed Harris) lets Mav know that his former Top Gun rival Iceman has assigned him to work as a teacher to an elite group of Top Gun grads in San Diego, California, a role he accepts begrudgingly. His assignment is to train a strike team to destroy a heavily-defended uranium enrichment plant, which is not yet operational.

Upon reuniting with former flame Penny Benjamin (Connelly) and getting a glimpse at Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller), the son of his late friend Goose, he meets the team and wins their respect after a series of dogfights. Rooster has a deep resentment toward Maverick, who he blames for the death of his father and for blocking his Naval Academy application.

After opening up to Iceman, who has terminal throat cancer, about his doubts, he tells him that “it’s time to let go,” but a teary-eyed Maverick says he is still struggling. In a steamy shirtless scene reminiscent of one from the original, the recruits enjoy a game of football on the beach. Mav spends time with Penny, and reveals that he pulled Rooster’s Naval Academy papers because of a dying wish made by his mother that her son would not become a pilot.

Iceman dies, and Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson (Hamm) grounds Mav after a crash during training. His removal is short-lived and he is later appointed the team leader.

The chosen team hit their target and successfully make it out of the steep canyon but are met with surface-to-air missiles and fighters. Maverick sacrifices his plane to protect Rooster from an incoming strike, and the jets are ordered back to the carrier.

Instead of heading back, Rooster goes out to find Maverick alive and the pair steal an F-14 from the air base. They destroy two fighters but run out of ammunition when a third attacks. Thankfully, Jake “Hangman” Seresin (Powell) comes to their rescue and shoots it down, allowing them all to return safely.
